I was born the son of Jan and Danna Mongoven in La Jolla, California on April 30th 1979. I grew up in Carlsbad. My interest in writing music began when I was 10 years old, when I started playing guitar. At that time I was interested in hard rock and heavy metal (especially Def Leppard, Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer). I spent the majority of my youth listening to and playing this kind of music with my brother Cory and my friends Dean Robinson and Brian Snyder. When I was 14 years old, a friend of mine introduced me to classical music. I quickly became interested in writing classical music, started playing piano and listening exclusively to classical music. In high school I began to study composition with Nathan Phillips at UCSD. After high school I attended New England Conservatory in Boston, where I studied with Alan Fletcher and in May of 2001 completed a B.M. in Composition. It was during my first semester at the conservatory that I began to take serious interest in using mathematics in my composition. I presently live in Halle, Germany teaching English as a foreign language.
